The ‘Right Marketing’ to the ‘Right People’ with the ‘Right Message’ is the key to you owning a successful carpet cleaning business!

Your price and average job ticket are all to do with the ‘Right Marketing’ and has nothing to do with your ability to clean dirty carpets!  If you don’t send the right message to the right person at the right time your wasting your money.  

For example I live in the small market town of Royston, Hertfordshire, and a Tesco ‘Superstore’ dominates the town.   Yes, we have a small Morrison’s in town, but if you want to get a weekly shop and park outside you’d use Tesco’s or you’d have to drive 8-10 miles for another store … so why has Tesco’s been advertising their ‘special offers’ every week with flyers in local papers when they are the biggest store around?

The simple answer is they don’t know when the ‘right time’ is or who the ‘right people’ are to keep their name in front of, so they blast their ‘message’ out to all the people all of the time. 

Does it work for them? … YES   

Do you have the marketing budget to do this? … NO

So without an ‘unlimited budget’ you need targeted marketing you can count upon.  And marketing that works.  You need to work with your old client database and build that by send a compelling offer to people in your area and keep the marketing working for you.

Is Traditional Marketing Dead?

No of course not!  Over the last few years I’ve heard people tell me normal or traditional “Marketing is dead” … “No one reads print” I’m told.    And the one I love “Internet is the only way forward” …

… Well I’d like to agree, as it would be a lot cheaper and easier … BUT I CAN’T!

While I do agree publications like Yellow Pages don’t return as much as they once did AND we all need to improve our ‘Internet Marketing Skills’ as soon the majority of our marketing will be via the Internet, at the moment it’s another great tool to help us generate another £3,000-£5,000 a month … you can’t rely upon it feeding you completely yet! 

Allow me to explain…

• I have some guys tell me they get all or most of the work from the Internet. OK, if you’re running small business and turning over £2,000 - £3,000 a month business and have a good customer database I can understand it and you maybe able to do it. However, what if you turned over £10,000 - £25,000 a month like many of my clients.  For example Pierre De Wet in Cambridge turns over £19,000 a month… and if we said he had 33% of the business was repeat and referrals he would need to generate £12,540 a month from the internet.   I’ve not seen anyone (as yet) prove they can make over £10,000 a month every month from the internet!  SO WE NEED THE INTERNET AS PART OF OUR MARKETING 

• Also most ‘Internet Marketing’ relies upon someone looking for you, ie Google search for ‘Carpet Cleaning My Town’.  Great!  Think about what I said before about the ‘right time’.   Like at home … I really would like my bathroom retiled.  Some mornings I look at the boring white tiles and think how much nicer the bathroom would be with natural stone tiles. Once out of the bathroom and dressed I’ve forgotten about if for another day.  If only a ‘Tilers’ flyer was on my doormat as I left for work one morning I’d probably take my mobile phone out my pocket and call them for quote.  Think how many of the people in your town spend a weekend at home looking at their dirty carpets, meaning to call someone in the week, but their busy lives just get in the way!    

Now having said this I do believe you need to start looking at where you spend your marketing budget!  I agree you need to be looking more at the internet as a source of work and over the next few years this may be one of your biggest income revenues … but how can you trust to improve your internet without losing your shirt?

I’m sure just like me, you’ve been bombarded by ‘Internet Gurus’ making all sort of claims.  Every man and his dog that knows something about websites or web design and claims they can grow your business with PPC (Pay Per Click on Google) or SEO (Search Engine Optimisation).

How Do We Improve Our Share Of Internet?

It’s not easy as it sounds.  For the last few years I’ve been searching for someone that really knows how to market on the internet to help carpet cleaners with their on-line marketing.
