As a carpet cleaner I learned one important fact.

The majority of my customers would forget my company name within two weeks of the completion of the job.    I would have customers say, “I’ve been meaning to call, but I couldn’t find your phone number!”   

I’d give them loads of information on my company, I’d give them business cards and of course my invoice with my phone number on … plus I’d send annual reminders but they still couldn’t find my number!

Some would say “I’m so glad I found you again - I was flicking through the yellow pages for ages and had to guess which was your advert as I couldn’t remember your company name”.  This was after I had done an excellent job and they loved my work!

Now all this could just be excesses … but just think how much more money I lost because they picked someone else?  Or how much more money I could have made if they came back to me sooner?

My Best Customer Retention Tool


I have tried several customer retention ideas over the years, however there was one idea that worked far better than the rest. Giving away, a FREE Carpet Spotter to every customer.   The bottle I found best was a trigger spray and the label was printed with my company name and phone number – so now there was no way they could say they couldn’t find my number … it was under the kitchen sink! Remember it can cost you 500-600% more to find a new customer as it does to keep an old one!



Here’s 7 Ways FREE Spotters Can Help You Make Money!


1.    Best Customer Retention Tool!
I am absolutely convinced that this is the best customer retention tool! In fact, you can absolutely secure your future success by making this plan an important part of your marketing effort. It’s true - I mean it - I really believe it!

Give a FREE Spotter to each customer before you start the job … and explain how to use it. Then say, “If you find a spill doesn’t come out you have my phone number in your hand and call me and I’ll give you more advice”.

Don’t charge for the spotter!!  I hear some people spending 10-15 minutes selling the product for £5 -£10 each … what a waste for time!  Add £10 to the invoice and give the spotter FREE!  You’ll find with the ‘Universal Law of Reciprocity’ – will make your customer more open to spend more money with you … so then you can sell more cleaning or protection.

Try it and you’ll see your customers becoming your best Raving Fans!

2.    I Miss You Offer … Lifetime Supply
Write to your best customers and offer them a free ‘Lifetime supply’ of carpet spotter if they book work with you this month.

A simple letter explaining you cleaned their carpets last year … and now you have a new ‘Eco-Friendly Cleaning’ system you’d like to introduce to them.  If they have any work you’ll give them a lifetime supply of spotter as long as they remain a customer with you.    


3.    Best Referral Programme
As a new customer can cost £40 - £60 to find without doubt the best (and cheapest) way to get new clients is to be referred to someone by one of your own ‘Raving Fans’.   Ask your customers if they know anyone else how would like a free spotter. 

Leave them with 2-3 bottles and a covering letter attached to it with an outstanding offer on for the new customer.  This is such a low cost way to bring in new work.

4.    Five Arounds
Before you start cleaning take a couple of minutes to run around the close neighbours and ‘deliver’ FREE spotters.  Just wrap a leaflet around the spotter and attach with an elastic band.  The leaflet should say … “I’m working at your neighbours house Mrs smith at number 5, and I just wanted to give you a free gift as my way of saying sorry if I made any noise today”  Then go on to say “Please feel free to come around and see my cleaning for yourself or ask your neighbour if they liked my cleaning service”.   

Starting with the immediate neighbour on the left, cross the road and deliver to the three houses opposite your customer, then come back across the road and go to the neighbour on your customer’s right. 

That’s five homes that may know your customer and the returns are very high!    

5.    Give Spotter On The Audit
At the audit you could demonstrate them how to use the spotter on their carpet … spray on and blot with a white cloth and show the colour transfer.  Then before you discuss any prices tell them the spotter is theirs as a free gift.  You can explain customers receive a free ‘Lifetime supply’ of carpet spotter as long as they’re a customer of yours.

Again the idea is to give a gift without requesting a reward will help them to see you are serious about developing a long-term relationship. 

If you ad ‘FREE Carpet Spotter with every Audit’ on your leaflets and adverts you will dramatically increase the amount of calls!!

6.    Joint Ventures
Just think of all the local companies that also deal with the same type of customers as you!  Domestic cleaners, carpet retailers, health clubs, Golf Clubs etc… it doesn’t take much to talk someone to give a free gift to their customers, and with the spotter it’s your name and phone number on them!

Just think a local carpet retailer and give a free gift of a carpet spotter to everyone he quotes for this week.  This is a powerful way to attract new customers who may not have been looking for a carpet cleaner.

7.    FREE School Cleaning
In our experience schools (especially the nursery class) would love to have you clean their carpets for free in return for them endorsing your service … but they are not allowed to!

So we have found a way around this.  Contact the schools PTA and offer them a free clean in return for them promoting your service and giving out your FREE spotter.  In return you will pay 10% of every job from parents that purchases from you within that month.

Alternatively offer them the top prize for this year raffle.   A whole house of carpet cleaning and protection (worth up to £500) for the first prize and 5 rooms for FREE cleaning as a runner up prize and 20 FREE spotters.
