The leather upholstery market has grown rapidly over the last few years and is showing little sign of slowing down. It is a product that has an aura about it and is considered to be a high value purchase.
There have also been a number of myths spoken about leather over the years such as, it is an easy maintenance product, does not require cleaning, and is tough and resilient.
The reality is quite different, if a leather suite is going to stay in good condition and last for many years of use, it generaly requires as much, if not more attention than a fabric suite.
Heat and sunlight can dry and harden leather causing it to crack. Soiling build up especialy body oils can break down the surface finish and be absorbed into the leather. Scratches and surface damage can also lead to contaminants being absorbed.
Leather upholstery should be vacuumed regularly, cleaned with a mild leather cleaning solution at least twice a year, but as often as six if heavily used. After cleaning a good quatity protector designed for each specific leather type should be applied.
Even when upholstery is maintained correctly accidents can happen and it is recommended that corrective action should be taken to repair any damage as soon as it occurs in order to prevent the problem from escalating, becoming more difficult and to stop further probems developing.
Professional care and maintenance of leather upholstery requires the development of specilist knowledge, skills and products.
You can now offer technical advice and product information to Manufacturers, Retailers, Upholsterers, Other Cleaning Companies, Vehicle Retailers and Restorers covering all aspects of the care, repair and maintenance of upholstered leather surfaces and coverings.
